What’s So Special About Hydrogen Fluoride?

Hydrogen Fluoride Safety

When: August 15, 2018

Time:  7:30am – 9:00am (Breakfast)

Venue: American Red Cross

600 N. Parkcenter Drive Santa Ana, CA (Room 208)

Speaker: James Unmack

Two refineries in Southern California use hydrofluoric acid (HF) to make gasoline and have large reserves of HF on site.  Neighbors to these refineries are concerned about accidental releases that have occurred in the past and the potential of a big release to kill many thousands.  This presentation is about why HF is different and why we should be concerned.

James Unmack is a certified industrial hygienist, certified safety professional and professional engineer.  He spent 10 years with Cal/OSHA in a variety of assignments, including enforcement district manager, consultation area manager, and senior industrial hygienist for occupational cancer control.  Jim retired from the Air Force Reserve where he worked on the space shuttle.  After years in the corporate world he now consults on environmental health and safety.
